Accomplishments 1990 - 2014

While GIDE over the 24 years of its establishment evolved from impact evaluation at project level to policy level, it also developed skills in capacity building from hands-on workshops to Masters and PhD Program in Africa.  GIDE relies on a strong relationship with impact evaluation institutions world-wide to underscore the Institute’s strong commitment to impact evaluation of projects/programs and policies and provide capacity building opportunities that are accessible and relevant to African researchers, policy makers and practitioners.

Today, GIDE has a unique expertise in delivering cost effective, yet inclusive impact evaluation through: (i) Systematic Reviews - synthesis of evidence;  (ii) Performance Evaluations of Projects, Programs & Policies and  Environmental Impact Assessment & Environmental Audit as well as capacity building in these three areas.   The Institute has extensive Africa-wide experience in impact evaluation with a goal for services in low income countries of Asia also.  Internationally, GIDE is forging a successful reputation as a project manager and provider of highly-skilled expert assistance in the areas of impact evaluation and cross-cutting institutional and public sector capacity building in: (i) Systematic Reviews (ii) Environmental Impact Assessment; and (iii) Regional Integration.  Capacity building is undertaken through hands-on workshops; and on-line and in-class training courses in collaboration with partners such as the Flowers School of Management and Technology, Germany and universities in Africa and USA.

Since its inception GIDE worked and continue  to work in 20+ African countries with a number of bilateral and international development agencies including African Development Bank (AfDB), Australia Government, DAAD (Germany), Gov. of Netherlands, IDRC (Canada), IFC,  JICA (Japan), SIDA (Sweden), Stockholm Environment Institute (Sweden), FAO, UNICEF, UNDP, OECF (Japan), USAID, World Bank etc. To date, GIDE accomplished over 50+ impact evaluation projects with these agencies.

Examples of GIDE's accomplishments in inclusive green growth through impact evaluation and related capacity building from 1990 - 2014 are summarized below:

The Katse Dam - One of the largest infrastructural projects for which GIDE has accomplished Environmental Impact Assessment. It is a major international undertaking and is now the highest dam in Africa with a height of 185m. It is also one of the world's largest concrete arch dams in terms of volume, with a capacity of nearly 2 billion cubic meters and a surface area of 38.5 square kilometers (1998/99).
